Big, Blue & Beyond!

The goal of this project was to conceptualize and create a 360 campaign for the first season of the show The Tick. This included pitching ideas from print billboard ads to digital website takeovers. The show centers around a world where superheroes and villains have been real for decades. Arthur, an unassuming accountant with no superpowers, realizes that his city is owned by a global super-villain who was long thought to be dead. As he becomes obsessed with the conspiracy, most people think he’s crazy. One person who believes Arthur is a mysterious new ally, The Tick, who is a bizarre blue superhero who may just be a figment of Arthur’s imagination.

Amazon wanted a memorable campaign for the first season of the show and allowed my team to come up with great ideas without being limited to a budget. Some of my favorite ideas included taking over the Amazon website and changing everything to the color blue. We also came up with the idea of creating a custom recommended list that would include all of the items The Tick suggested for the Amazon user.

• BANNERS & TAKEOVERS

Once we won the pitch, the print team handled creating all of the different pieces of key art. This included individual character art pieces for the superheros and villains of the show as well as art pieces that just featured The Tick and Arthur. Then me and the digital team were in charge of taking that art and creating custom digital and motion pieces. The banner campaign was a major part of the digital advertisement for the show. We created takeovers where we were able to manipulate the art to fit on the site of different media outlets like IGN and Fandango. The team was also able to create custom video spots as well as custom copy that tailored to the website it was on.

• MOTION

The creation of the motion assets for this project were incredible. Me and the digital crew were able to come up with several ideas for the intro animations to the show that were used for television and social. For example, we came up with the idea that Arthur would confidently look down upon the city from the top of a building, only to be spooked and almost slip from the heavy wind. The frightened still of Arthur is used as his character key art. One of my favorite ideas was for Miss Lint and her villainous super power, electricity. I thought it would be hilarious if she was walking along and trying to send a text on her phone only to drop it in a puddle. Her anger and frustration added with the water would then create an exhilarating lightning storm behind her.

• CUSTOM CONTENT

One of my favorite pieces of art to create from this campaign was the Youtube Masthead. I was able to have full control of the design and how it would actually function. For the Masthead, I wanted users to have a fun and creative way of being able to learn more about each character from the show. I came up with the idea of swiping through each character’s strength & weakness. Once I created the design I sat down with our copywriter to create fun and witty lines that would show each character’s individuality.

• CONCLUSION

This project means a lot to me because it was one of the first theatrical projects that I was involved in from the beginning stages and saw the growth of the campaign from start to finish. It was a great feeling to drive down the street and see the artwork for this campaign knowing that I had a part in the design and ideation. I feel fortunate to have worked with an amazing team to create a campaign that was exciting to be apart of.
